Shapiro (2018) identified feeder memories as “untapped earlier memories that contribute to the current dysfunction and block processing of it” (Shapiro, 2018). She went on to describe how the processing of these early memories reduces the current distress and makes the current target more amenable for processing. While the float back technique usually produces the relevant feeder memory. There are times when a client struggles to identify the early memory, even though the current distress is irrational in the context of the reported trauma memory.

In the search for a feeder memory, identifying the likely age of the client at the time of the feeder memory incident, is useful.

The client’s age provides not just a point in time but location in the world, developmental tasks being attempted, neurological development, and quality of emotion. Bringing these factors to the client’s awareness makes it more likely that the trauma network holding the feeder memory will be accessed. In this workshop the EMDR therapist will learn the Somatic Bridge and why it is considered the current best practice as well as how to identify the likely age of the feeder memory, through multiple vectors. We will then look at the practical and ethical uses of these age estimates, including the creation of fictitious narratives for preverbal and other unremembered incidents that still allow for effective trauma processing.
