You've read the standards, but how do you translate
them into your day-to-day work?

This course will address the ethical and professional responsibilities of mental health clinicians engaged in child custody work, particularly in child custody evaluations. Appropriate for clinicians of all experience levels, it will examine how disciplinary ethics intersect with the legal process and the sensitive roles professionals assume when working with families involved in custody disputes. Common complaints reported to regulatory boards highlight recurring challenges in custody evaluations. Clinical practices tied to the courts will be reviewed.

Examine common ethics complaints from the last
year and learn what may trigger them.

To guide practitioners along an ethical path, the course will review the AFCC’s “ABC’s” framework—Accountability, Boundaries, and Competence—as essential principles for maintaining professional integrity and avoiding ethical or legal pitfalls. The final section will outline best practices for interacting with the court - emphasizing accurate documentation, confidentiality, and effective communication with both parties and with the judiciary. Together, these elements provide a structured roadmap for ethical, competent, and legally sound practice in court-connected forensic and clinical work.

Complete this course course knowing behaviors, forms and practices
that will keep you compliant with ethical standards.
